Exploring the Writing Workshop

 Hi guys,

It is almost the end of our Blogging session. I  hope it has been fun and inspiring. This blog is about "The Writing Workshop". Again this is quite new to me. However I considered myself quite fortunate to have given the opportunity to learn about it. In a nutshell, three strategies can be used when using the writing working: Teaching Time , Writing Time and Sharing Time.  It can be in the form of Mini lessons . As teachers we must realize that NO students are alike and therefore they will be at various stages in developing their writing pieces. Hence teachers will be in engaged in various activities  during the writing workshop for example circulating among students and offering support or modelling adult writing.  As teacher we normally assign  writing tasks to children however we also tend to fail to teach them how to write. The writing workshop allow students to write and share  their pieces which make students motivated and enthusiastic about their writing. They get a chance to collaborate with their peers. When using a writing workshop it is important to keep a record of students' work to track progress and needs. This was highlighted in our sessions with Mrs. L when she will ask us how far we were in our writing pieces and  recorded it.

The chart below depicts the parts of a writing Workshop.

The writing workshop stood out to me because it is a pathway for teachers to support children as writer. After writing they get a chance to share with the peers using the author's chair or peer conferencing. As I delve into the  classroom for the new term I will be implementing the writing workshop however I do think I need to do some extra reading about it.
This link above gives a brief overview of the Writing workshop which was beneficial to me.
What are your views on the writing Workshop?

  1. Hi Shirdin,
Your exploration of the Writing Workshop is very thought- provoking. I too really like the writing workshop strategy as it offers a dynamic platform for students to not just write but also share and collaborate on their pieces. I completely agree that recognizing each student's unique writing journey is crucial. The three strategies you mentioned -Teaching Time, Writing Time, and Sharing Time, are fantastic ways to structure the workshop. Encouraging peer collaboration and providing guidance while allowing individual creativity to flourish is key. I haven't personally tried the Writing Workshop, but I'm intrigued to give it a shot. Mrs. L modelled it really well and I see it as a fantastic way to empower students in their writing journey. Thanks for sharing the insights and the link!
