Mr. Persuasive Writing

 Hello there,

Today I will be blogging about Persuasive Writing.

Ingredients

2 cups of Rhetorical questions

3 cups of Exaggeration

1 cup of emotional appeal

A tablespoon of contrast

A tablespoon of repetition

5 cups of Authoritative  Evidence

Procedure

First start with an introduction

Add your hook, stance and your thesis

Second put your first body paragraph

Add all the ingredients

Present your topic sentence clearly with examples  along with a closing remark.

Add your second paragraph and follow the step above

Add your  third paragraph and peel.

Finally mix your closing paragraph.

The recipe above is something I will try to keep in my head when writing  a persuasive piece. This piece of writing, I find the most difficult to write. I think mainly because it does not really require creativity or imagination but rather facts. So a lot of research is needed. There must be an emotional appeal and trust me you need to elaborate and give a lot of examples.

Personally,  I think more time should have been spend on  this genre of writing in our LIT class. Mainly because I think it is the hardest type of genre to write. All may not share the same sentiment however it is evident in the primary school classrooms. I believe we needed more practice  and more  samples  should have been given for us to critique and use as a guide to give us a more clearer view A similar teaching strategy  to what was done with our  narrative piece  could have been  implemented. For example use the Authors chair 💺 to share and get feedback. In that way I think it would  have helped those who struggle with Persuasive Writing especially me. Yes persuasive Writing was also taught in our past Communication class. Did I grasp it then ? No  I needed extra classes.

This shows me that we need to provide students with adequate time, assistance and show different samples of the writing for students to get a visual representation to work with when they are tasked with  writing. Overall I do believe that I need to do some more practice and a little more reading in order to be  more comfortable in implementing and marking persuasive writing in my class.

I decided to search on YouTube for a simple video that can give me sort of clarity.

This video is both child friendly and quite informative I have decided to share it with my students when doing Persuasive writing . I hope it can be useful to you or even your students.

  3. Yes, Shirdin girl, you truly captured the essence of a persuasive piece in such an artistic and ingenious way! I love it! Your breakdown into ingredients and steps was just awesome and it makes the whole idea of writing persuasive pieces more welcoming. Actually, this piece of writing is my favorite type of writing. I don’t know if it’s because I like to argue but it is my favorite type of genre. I totally get what you mean about the need for research and facts—it's all about being convincing with evidence. It's interesting to hear your perspective on spending more time on this in LIT class, and yes maybe some more time could have been given, considering our various learning styles. You've highlighted the importance of practice and having clear examples to guide; this is very crucial for the students if we want our students to reach a level of mastery with it. I love the Author's chair strategy! The provision of feedback is exactly what the students need. Look how it assisted us, so I know it will be of great support for them. Thanks for the video as well!

  4. Hi Rowann I am happy we share the same sentiments except for the favourite part of writing. You do know I like to debate also but Persuasive writing is not my friend as yet. Hopefully we have a better relationship as time progresses. The union will definitely make me better at writing persuasive pieces and also better at demonstrating it in the classroom.
