3 Stars 1 wish
Hi LIT Fam,
I choose to blog about the 3 stars and a wish tool that was used on different occasions in our LIT class. I was drawn to it because it can be used as a self assessment or a whole class assessment base on a child's writing. Also because it can be a great motivator for students which can help boost their confidence when it comes to writing or reading. The 3 stars and a wish activity allows students to reflect on their writing and doing so can help them take ownership of their writing which leads to responsibility.
In one of our session volunteers were asked to share their narrative pieces and the class use the 3 stars 1 wish tool to comment on them. It was a quite rewarding session because most times when critiquing a piece of writing one tend to stick mostly on the negatives and what was not good about the writing rather than what was done well. However with this tool it makes you tell three things that was good about the story and I wish that can improve the writing. I think it helps motivate the writers since they were given positive feedback which can help them better themselves.
I am seeing this tool being effective in teachers parent conferences and all subject areas. It can also be used as a goal setter at the beginning of the school term for students. The three stars one wish tool reminds me of a math workshop we went to hosted by McMillan publishers. We were told that even though a child may get a math problem wrong we must not just tell the child that it is wrong but let them know what was good about the problem they did.
The 3 stars one wish tool is something I will be using in my class. Students need a lot of encouragement this tool does just that. I LOVE IT

In this world where encouragement to students is like the fuel for a student's journey, the 3 Stars and a Wish tool blossoms as a shining beam. I can feel the passion and love you have for this approach, and it's contagious! Here's to embracing the power of positivity and fostering a community of confident and motivation in our students. Keep shining, and keep spreading the love for tools that make a real difference in our educational landscapes. Cheers to the journey ahead! 3✨ an a💡 #LitFamLove #WritingCommunity #PositiveEducation
ReplyDeleteKai, thank you.Yes indeed, encouragement is like the fuel that ignites a child's journey and just to add it also makes them feel important with a sense of accomplishment in the classroom. As I jog my memory to my days in primary school although some of the learning tools we use today were not in the past I can still remember my standard 5 teacher Mr.Lord giving us hi fives when we did something good and would say better luck next time when we did not. To put icing on the cake he will ask you what to do to get better right? Positive feedback does wonders in a child's life.
ReplyDeleteHi Shirdin,
ReplyDeleteI love how you explored the "3 Stars and a Wish" tool in your post! It's fantastic how it can be a self-assessment or used in class, giving students that positive boost for their writing, or reading. I totally agree with you in that we must focus on the positives while offering constructive feedback. This is the game changer right there! It's great to hear you found it rewarding during the narrative session, emphasizing the importance of highlighting what's good alongside areas for improvement. The idea of using it in conferences and across subjects sounds convenient too. It's awesome how tools like these encourage and motivate students. I'm sure our students will benefit a lot from it!
