Blog #.3 Writing Process

 Hi Colleagues,

Last class we discovered more about the writing process. We looked at the stages and also discussed our experiences with it. The writing process has five stages which are recursive and not linear as a result students need time to revisit and revise their writing moving back and forth between the different stages. These stages are pre-writing, drafting, revisiting, editing and publishing. The writing process helps students organize their thoughts and ideas, write freely as first, reflect, proofread and publish. it is important to note that students need to set aside the writing for few days before editing and feedback is crucial.

As I traveled back to secondary school I can vaguely remember my teacher giving us back our stories to rewrite however I cannot remember if we did the writing process. As a teacher of Grade 4 I have not really utilize the writing process in full hence I wonder if I have failed my students by doing so. I think the reason for this is because I was not so confident about implementing it in my class. I am elated to share that the session have enlighten me and moving forward  I am more confident in explaining  the stages and modeling the writing process  in my class. I believe that the writing process makes sense and it is important that teachers utilize it in various grades. It can help reduce anxiety in students since its break the writing into pieces they can manage. It also helps them become better writers.

A next element in the last session that stood out for me was the pedagogical methodology that the lecturer used to ensure that we understood the different stages.  The whole class contributed to the pre-writing stage as the lecturer asked us questions. This helped a lot since it gave me a better idea of the different stages. I also got an idea of how to teach and model the stages.

What has been your experience with the writing process?

  1. Hi Shirdin, like you, I feel like I have failed my students as well since I did not implement the writing process the way it ought to be taught. I did not know that you have to teach students how to generate ideas nor give them a lot of time to do so. I believe the writing process is one topic that teachers must also review in the professional development sessions. Many new teachers come on the scene and are not familiar with the process. In this way, they will learn about the process, ask questions that they have about the process and even get their misconceptions cleared up. This prepares them, enhances their comfort and boosts the confidence needed to teach the writing process to the students.

    2. Rowann I also believe that it should be a topic to be discussed in professional deveopmental sessions. Writing is an important aspect of learning which works hand in hand with reading. I think most students are not good writers cause as teacher we do not take the time to teach the writing process to them. I am so grateful for the knowledge gained during the LIT session on the writing process.

  2. Your thoughts about the writing process are really smart and relatable. You get that writing isn't always done in a straight line, and you see how important it is for students to go back and fix their writing. It seems like you haven't used the whole writing process a lot in your Grade 4 class, and you're worried it might not be the best for your students. A lot of teachers feel the same way. But it's great that the recent class helped you understand and feel more confident about explaining and showing the writing process to your students. You see how the process can help students not feel so stressed about writing because it breaks it into smaller steps. Also, you noticed how the teacher involved the whole class in the pre-writing part, showing how teaching can be a team effort. Sharing your teaching journey and asking about others' experiences at the end is a cool way to learn together and build a supportive community among teachers. Keep growing and finding better ways to teach! 📝🌱 #WritingProcess #LearningTogether #TeachingJourney
